This collaborative effort reflects a deep commitment not only to improving medical infrastructure but also to fostering knowledge, compassion, and community strength.
MTIMA’s work extends beyond immediate healthcare improvements; it kindles hope and builds capacity, ensuring that every heartbeat in Malawi can resonate with health, strength, and promise. This sustained vision and concrete action since 2013 highlight MTIMA’s dedication to lasting change and the betterment of Malawi’s future.
Together with local partners and volunteers, MTIMA continues to light the way toward a brighter, healthier Malawi, turning aspiration into reality one life at a time.

CSE-MTIMA Global Medical Outreach Bursary Opportunity 2026!
The CSE–MTIMA Global Medical Mission Bursary supports Canadian sonographers and trainees to deliver hands-on echocardiography education, mentorship, and capacity building with our partners in Malawi. The bursary helps cover travel and in-country costs for a ~14-day mission. Applicants are selected once per year and then matched to one of three mission windows in late March–November 2026.
*Important Application Notes*
This is a single annual call that covers all three 2026 missions; there is not a separate call before each mission.
Registering interest does not guarantee selection. Only fully completed applications proceed to panel review.
Up to six (6) bursaries will be awarded for 2026, with priority given to CSE member sonographers and trainees.
Successful applicants will be paired (e.g., one senior + one trainee where possible) and matched to a mission window based on team balance and program needs.
Check out the Application Guideline for more detail.

-
A short motivation statement (400–600 words), CV (PDF), summary of clinical/teaching skills, ranked mission-date preferences (late March–April 2026), and 1~2 references (name and contact; letter may be requested). You’ll also be asked to confirm passport validity (≥6 months beyond travel) and agree to our Code of Conduct and privacy policy.
-
We welcome applications from practicing sonographers, cardiology trainees, and closely aligned cardiovascular professionals who are committed to teaching, respectful partnership, and sustainable skill transfer in resource-limited settings. Prior teaching experience is an asset, not a requirement.
-
Each award targets a funding envelope of approximately $6,000 CAD per participant to support economy airfare, shared accommodation, local ground transport and logistics, daily meals and “Lunch & Learn” sessions, program incidentals, and two cultural context (e.g., Majete Safari Reserve, Satemwa Tea Estate visit) that supports team wellbeing and learning. Final allocations vary with airfare and local price changes; MTIMA/CSE manage bookings to remain within the envelope.
-
Applications are scored by a joint CSE–MTIMA panel. We assess clinical fit (echo skills), teaching potential, alignment with equity and partnership values, availability, and overall team balance. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to a brief virtual interview. Final pairings aim to maximize educational impact and continuity.
-
All awardees participate in pre-departure orientation covering travel, cultural context, local systems, safety, and schedule flexibility. Daily schedules guide activities but may vary with seasonal factors, weather, logistics, and local holidays. On site, volunteers deliver supervised scanning, structured teaching blocks, and mentorship alongside our Malawian partners. Light outcomes reporting (e.g., teaching logs) is required, and awardees share a brief reflection at CSE 2026.
-
We follow local hospital protocols, patient privacy rules, and a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination. Volunteers are responsible for recommended travel health measures and vaccinations as advised by a travel clinic.
